HISTORY and ARCHIVE

The Crossroads Irish-American Festival is a literary, musical, and
cultural event that takes place every year in San Francisco in the days leading up to St. Patrick's Day.

It is a celebrated annual festival inviting the pubic to come together around inspired, creative, and relevant events regarding Irish and Irish-American history and culture.  We are dedicated to creating a dynamic forum every year where meaningful, many-sided conversations take place about our Irish and Irish-American histories, our ancient roots and modern hybridities, our passions, our work, our presence around the globe and our creative efforts to make sense of it all!

The Crossroads Irish-American Festival is the only on-going festival of its kind in the country.

The Crossroads Irish-American Festival is a project of and fiscally
sponsored by Intersection for the Arts. It grew out of the Irish Studies Program at New College of California, which has been a critical convener and collaborator in the Irish and Irish-American cultural and political landscape of San Francisco for more than a decade, including the 2002 festival, Gates of Gold, the predecessor to the Crossroads Festival.

How the Irish Invented Slang

How The Irish Invented Slang has been selected as a winner of the twenty-eighth annual American Book Awards for 2007! In his most recent best-seller How the Irish Invented Slang: the Secret Language of the Crossroads, Daniel Cassidy, co-director of the Irish Studies program at New College of California and co-founder of the Crossroads Irish-American Festival, cuts through two hundred years of Anglo-American academic "baloney" and reveals the massive, hidden influence of the Irish language on American vernacular and slang.
