A presentation by Elizabeth Creely explored the dichotomy between the changing landscape of Ireland in 1915 and the “Shamrock Isle,” the Irish exhibit at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco that same year. While Ireland was on the cusp of eventual independence 100 years ago, the PPIE exhibit showed Ireland inhabited by a people untouched by change and frozen in time.
This presentation was preceded by an exhibit with photographs from the PPIE of 1915, contributed Mr. John Jones, an avid and discerning collector of books, newspapers, photographs and other historic materials related to Irish and Irish-American history. This event was a part of an ongoing citywide celebration of the centennial celebration of the PPIE.
